Even though I’m Black all year round and I celebrate Black Excellence 365, this month I decided to celebrate Black History Month and do a photoshoot inspired by my blackness and my African roots. Some pieces were handmade and some pieces came from Black owned businesses (on each piece, I’ll share the deets). I also decided to share Black history from some amazing Black women who have paved the way for the Black Girl Magic that happens today.

With this inspiration, it has called me to reflect on my Blackness in light of the world and culture we live in and figure out how I can level up and what areas of my life I can level up in. So whether that means creating healthy relationship with my family members and my children, because in slavery we were ripped apart from our families causing dysfunctional family relationships, then so be it. Whether that is teaching my children how to process their emotions in a healthy way and only speak life into one another because of the death that was spoken into us during the Civil Right Era, then so be it.

It’s very important to look at our history and see the changes available to us because of the sacrifices our ancestors made. We are able to vote because of the countless people that fought and died for that right. We are able to integrate our schools and get higher education because of the people that fought and died for that right. Why not use this right to the best of our advantage?

So, my Plus Size Fashionistas, I decided to acknowledge my ancestors this month by buying ankara fabric from a fabric store in Norcross, GA, and using a simple circle skirt technique linked here! I crafted this circle skirt to go over a simple black dress that has been in my closet for years. Tell me ladies, are you celebrating Black History Month? If so, tell me below:
