Playing around with patterns is one of my favorite things to do. Although, usually when I do it, it surrounds my outfit. Never my actual shoes. This time, I decided to try something different and step a little out of my comfort zone.

When I saw these shoes in Nordstrom rack for the low, I instantly thought of this striped shirt I bought from Forever 21 years ago. Even though they didn’t have the same pattern (I hate matching things anyway), they did have something in common. The color!

These navy blue Sam Edelman shoes with the cute pom pom on the top have an orangeish design that looks very similar to the color on my top. Because let’s be realistic here. If you are going to do it, then why not do it big? Why not make a statement that has onlookers staring? Because that’s what fashion is right? Doing something daring and bold and unexpected.

There’s nothing interesting about looking perfect. You lose the point. You want what you’re wearing to say something about you. About who you are. -Emma Watson

I am by no means an expert on fashion. But I do consider myself to be fashion forward. So if you are looking to make a statement by mixing patterns and prints, here are a few tips:

  • Choose one bold color and a neutral color to balance the mixture of the patterns and prints off of. I went navy blue to even out the excitement of the shirt and the color of the shoes.
  • If you go with two different prints, choose something in the same color family so that it blends well even though they aren’t the exact same color or pattern.
  • Play with a variation of length and textures when switching it up. This breaks up the monotony of the patterns and helps bring in a little fun.
  • Don’t forget to rock it with confidence! Be unapologetically you and strut your stuff homegirl. Even if no one else agrees with your take on this outfit, be true to you! After all, fashion is all about stepping outside of the box.
